Nonprofit Basics

What is a Nonprofit Organization?

A non-profit organization is a group organized for purposes other than generating profit and in which no part of the organization’s income is distributed to its members, directors, or officers. Non-profit corporations are often termed “non-stock corporations.” Read more at:

Nonprofit Rights

When nonprofits need to act to protect their rights and the rights of their clients and constituents, they often operate in isolation from one another despite their common interests. And, they often have no place to turn for legal counseling and representation. Organizations dedicated to nonprofit advocacy often have legal teams or can connect you with legal experts. Examples include the National Council of Nonprofits and Center for Pro Bono.

Starting a Nonprofit Organization

There is a lot to think about when starting a nonprofit organization. Ask yourself the following questions: What kind of nonprofit do I want to start? Should I really start a nonprofit? Do I need a lawyer or can I do it myself? How do I register a nonprofit organization?

Here are some resources for starting a nonprofit organization:

  • Internal Revenue Service (IRS): The IRS provides a variety of resources for starting a nonprofit organization, including information on how to apply for tax-exempt status.
  • Nonprofit Legal Center: The Nonprofit Legal Center provides free and low-cost legal services to nonprofits, including assistance with starting a nonprofit organization.
  • Council of Nonprofits: The Council of Nonprofits provides a variety of resources for nonprofits, including information on how to start a nonprofit organization.
  • Guidestar: Guidestar provides a database of nonprofit organizations, as well as information on how to start a nonprofit organization.

National Council of Nonprofit Associations (NCNA)

The National Council of Nonprofit Associations (NCNA) is the network of state and regional nonprofit associations serving over 20,000 members in 41 states and the District of Columbia. NCNA links local organizations to a national audience through state associations and helps small and midsize nonprofits: manage and lead more effectively; collaborate and exchange solutions; engage in critical policy issues affecting the sector; and achieve greater impact in their communities. NCNA is also the convening organization for the Nonprofit Congress, an unprecedented effort to unite nonprofits and strengthen the charitable sector.
